Family Updates For October 2009
Here are the current happenings in our family:

Happy Halloween

There has been a lot of build up to Halloween this year. I have always loved it, and Jon and I were very excited to introduce Hannah to the fun. Hannah’s costume was picked out a long time ago and she could not wait to dress up.

This year we were lucky because the church Trunk-or-Treat was on Friday and our neighborhood Trick-or-Treat was on Saturday — two exciting opportunities to dress up. As with all of the things we have tried to do with Hannah since she came home from China, the weather absolutely didn’t cooperate. Trunk-or-Treat ended up inside the church. Inside or out, there was still fun to be had.

On Halloween we spent the morning carving pumpkins and roasting seeds. Later in the afternoon was spent getting dressed up. And then the time finally came for Hannah and her cousin to run around the neighborhood.

She had a great time even with the cold, windy day that we had. After about 2 blocks, however, we discovered Mulan's shoes were not all they were cracked up to be. As with most women, style came before function and no amount of reasoning would get her to change her shoes. Never fear! By the end of the neighborhood Daddy was carrying her along (as long as no one else could see).

The ironic thing about Hannah and Halloween is that she has absolutely no interest in almost any kind of candy. Unfortunately, all the things she hates (like chocolate — I know, unbelievable) are things that I love but don’t need. I live to diet another day. Enjoy the pictures.

Skating Thru A Sunday Afternoon

Our local ice rink had an open skate with free lessons so we thought we would see if Hannah liked ice skating. She was game to try it so off we went. We got some nice stinky skates from the counter for her and were ready to go.

The lesson started off the rink and then moved onto the ice. Hannah did really well for her first time and spent the whole hour and a half on the ice practicing. She had quite a few falls but always picked herself up and kept going. It was hard to drag her off the ice when skating was over.

After she was done she was very excited. So we asked her if she would like to take lessons. In typical Hannah style, lessons actually sounded too much like work, so a big NO to that. Enjoy the photos and the video.

Happy Halloween!

Fall Fun

Over the last couple of weekends we have tried to get in some good outdoor fall fun. First we went to a fall festival that had hayrides. The afternoon was kind of dreary with a little drizzle, but we thought we could handle it. When the hayride started, it was misting out but not much more than that, and the girls didn’t seem to mind so we all hopped on the ride. We had not gotten more than 10 feet when it started seriously raining. We were stuck at that point on a ride that was supposed to last for a half an hour. We were all completely soaked — to the point of being able to wring out our clothes. After that there was not a campfire big enough to warm/dry us. We all headed back home to dry off and get some dinner at a nice warm restaurant.

Last weekend was more successful. We went apple picking. The weather cooperated and there were plenty of apples to taste — I mean pick. Hannah had the tough job of getting carted around to all the best apples on the shoulders of whoever would carry her. Perfection is her game so we got all the best apples there. Now begins the fun job of pealing, cutting, cooking and canning.

Enjoy the pictures.
